Reverend Charmaine Braatvedt,
Vicar of the Parish of Devonport.

If you have clicked on here, then the chances are that you may want to know a bit about me, so here goes!

EARLY DAYS: I was brought up in Cape Town, South Africa where I also met and married my husband, Geoffrey. We left South Africa on our big OE in 1985 and after travelling around Europe and America we found ourselves in the UK where my husband Geoffrey worked as a doctor and did his postgraduate studies.

It was in the UK that I had my three children. We immigrated to New Zealand in 1992 and have lived in Devonport ever since.

FAMILY.  I am married to Geoffrey, and we have an adult son and two teenage daughters.

HOBBIES. I have had a life long interest in dance and for many years it was my dream to become a ballet dancer. I taught ballet for a few years and even had a stint lecturing in the History of Ballet at Cape Town University Ballet School. I love art, music and poetry. I also enjoy travel and have had the good fortune to visit many interesting places in the world.

ACADEMIC: After leaving school I attended the University of Cape Town and graduated with a BA and a Secondary Teacher’s Diploma. I became a teacher of History and English at a girl’s school in Cape Town where I was Head of History and Dean of the equivalent of Year 11. While living in England I taught English and History in Bristol and also studied at the London School of Montessori. When we came out to New Zealand I did a course in tutoring children with learning difficulties  and taught pupils from home  for four years, before accepting the position of lay minister here at Holy Trinity Devonport in 1997.

MY FAITH JOURNEY: I sensed the call of God in my life at a fairly young age, but being female,  it was not clear to me how it would be possible for me to exercise my vocation. It was only once we had come to New Zealand that I was offered the opportunity as a woman, to be ordained and so I came to understand how God would use me in full time ministry. I will forever be grateful for this amazing opportunity which New Zealand has afforded me, to serve God in this way, as a priest in His Church.

My faith journey has taken a rather convoluted route. When I was a child, I attended a Catholic Boarding School and at weekends worshiped at the Methodist Church with my parents on Sundays.  As a teenager I became very involved in Youth for Christ. During my university years I was involved in the Pentecostal movement and attended a Pentecostal church. All of these varied streams in the Christian faith have influenced and shaped my spirituality. However, once I graduated from university, my faith journey took me to the Anglican Church and I have been involved in the Anglican Church ever since. 12 years ago I became a lay minister here in the parish of Devonport and during this time I was ordained, first as deacon and then as priest. I have been ordained for three years and it is a joy and delight to serve in ministry here.

MY STYLE: I am ‘a people person’ and I regard it a great privilege to be in full time ministry. I believe that it is my role as priest to create the space for people to discover God and to build close and lasting relationships with God. I believe that every person is unique and has a unique relationship with God and that Church should be a place where those relationships are nurtured and allowed to flourish.

I also believe that it is in community that we are best able to learn who we are, who God is and how to walk the Christian journey. So it is that I am committed to doing everything in my power to build up the community of faith which we call the church and to make it a safe place for people to make discoveries about God and to grow in their spiritual life.

Here in the Parish of Holy Trinity our mission is To know Christ and to make Christ known.

We strive to be a family in Christ; to nurture spiritual growth in Christ and to celebrate diversity in Christ.

This is the mission and vision to which I have dedicated my life.
